Biographical / Historical
Jeanette Brooks was the Artistic Director of The Dance Movement company. She is a past winnner of the Southern Arts Choreographic Award. Her vision of forming a repertory dance company was realised in 1998 following previous involvement with Phoenix Dance Company and other major dance companies in the early 1990s. The Dance Movement's first official show was 'Lifeline' (1999), followed by 'Bumper ][ Bumper,' 'UK Rocks,' and 'A Little Stoned.' Invited guest choreographers, including Mark Baldwin, Ross Cooper, Noni Bradley and Henri Oguike, have also created works for the company.
Jeanette has choreographed for Xpress Dance (dance and disability group), Eusebia and Company, and the London Studio Centre, as well as hanving her work performed as part of the ADAD tour of black choreograhers in 1999.
As a performer her varied backgroun and repertory styles has allowed her to move from Afro-Caribbean dance group Irie! Dance Company to jazz with Bullies Ballerinas; physical theatre with the Charnock Company to contemporary work with Phoenix Dance.
She has created numerous dance works for youth groups, including the Berkshire Youth Dance Company, Motivate, Hampshire Youth Dance Company, Norden Exposure Youth Dance Group and musical theatre works for Swan Youth Theatre. She has also directed many dance residency weeks, including Summer Dance Schools, and devised programmes of dance and audience development for local authories and various venues.
She has taught various techniques of dance, choreography and composition for the likes of Rambert evening school, Swindn Dance NDA, Phoenix Dance education unit and Berkshire Dance Programme.
She was a member of the Southern Arts Board Regional Artists Advisory Group, an ADAD Standing Committee member and Dance Manager for Bracknell Forest Borough Council.
