Biographical / Historical
The production 'Nubian Steps' was created in response to a report entitled 'Advancing Black Dancing' written by David Bryan for the Arts Council England in 1993, and was conceived as a platform for Black British choreographers and dancers. In 1996 Bryan set up the company OnyxArts productions, under which three Nubian Steps productions were staged in 1996, 1997 and 2001 in the Purcell Room at the Southbank Centre. The performances featured many of the artists that are present today including Maria Ryan (SOE Board and The Place); Robert Hylton; and Merville James (Phoenix Dance Theatre).
